About This Template
Think-pair-share ensures every student articulates ideas before whole-class discussions. This template structures the protocol: prompt presentation, silent reflection timer, partner cues, and randomized call-outs.
How It Works
- Present the Guiding Question (1 Minute). Type your inquiry question into the Text widget on the first slide and read it aloud once. After reading, maintain silence so students begin thinking immediately.
- Silent Thinking & Jotting (2 Minutes). The Work Phase widget signals silent individual work while the Timer counts down. Students jot down key bullet points or initial reactions without worrying about polished prose.
- Collaborative Pair Dialogue (4 Minutes). The second slide outlines partner expectations: Partner A explains their perspective first while Partner B listens, then roles switch, followed by identifying shared insights. Clear turn-taking prevents one partner from dominating the conversation.
- Whole-Group Share Out (8 Minutes). The third slide uses the Random Name Picker to call on three pairs. The Traffic Light shines Red to remind the classroom that the floor belongs to the active speakers.
Adaptations & Variations
As an engagement hook for a new unit, replace open questions with a provocative statement to evaluate. Partners analyze evidence rather than simply comparing answers, giving you immediate insight into prior student knowledge.
As an active check for understanding mid-lesson, run only the first two stages: silent reflection followed by partner talk. It requires only six minutes and reactivates every student without taking time for an extended whole-class share out.
In introductory secondary grades (grades 5–6), designate explicit roles: assign Partner A as the speaker and Partner B as the active summarizer before reversing roles.
When questions require deeper research across cooperative teams, transition to our Jigsaw Activity template. To wrap up the class period, use our Lesson Wrap-Up template.

- Enter your class roster into the name picker if you want randomized student selections.
- Preview the three slides once to familiarize yourself with the transition sequence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these whiteboard templates free?
Yes. All templates and all classroom tools are completely free to use without an account. Premium costs $2.49 per month and syncs your custom board layouts across devices, with the first month free. Student teachers receive permanently free Premium with verification.
Why is silent thinking time enforced?
Without dedicated quiet thinking time, quick responders speak while others disengage. The timer ensures all students have time to formulate thoughts before conversing.
Can I use this for quick formative checks?
Yes. Use just the first two slides for a five-minute check. Students reflect and talk with a partner, reactivating the room without needing an extended whole-class share.
