Troubleshooting on Classroom iPads
When running on classroom iPads, Safari behaves slightly differently than desktop browsers due to iPadOS gesture controls and security policies. Understanding these settings ensures smooth operation during lessons.
True Fullscreen via Home Screen Web App
Mobile Safari on iPad does not support standard browser fullscreen APIs for websites. The address bar remains visible, and downward Apple Pencil strokes can accidentally trigger Safari gesture bars. The best solution is adding ClassHelper as a Home Screen app:
- Open ClassHelper in Safari on your iPad.
- Tap the Share icon (the square with an upward arrow) in the Safari toolbar.
- Scroll down and select Add to Home Screen.
- Confirm by tapping Add.
- Launch the whiteboard from the new home screen icon.
Running ClassHelper from your home screen launches the app in standalone mode: browser navigation bars vanish, downward drawing strokes never conflict with browser gestures, and the bottom toolbar receives maximum screen real estate.
Touch Interactions and Apple Pencil Drawing
On touchscreen tablets, touch targets and stylus precision require specific habits:
- Grabbing and Moving Tools: If a widget is difficult to reposition, tap it once to select it, then drag using its header or drag handle.
- Drawing Mode Accidental Scrolling: If the board shifts while writing, ensure drawing mode is active. Tap the pen tool or press Esc / Done to exit drawing mode.
- Placing Images: On tablets, tap the Image Tool and choose Select Image from your photo library rather than dragging files from the Files app.
Physical keyboards connected via Smart Connector or Bluetooth support standard shortcuts, as detailed in Whiteboard Shortcuts.
Sound, Storage, and Private Tabs
Three common iPad classroom challenges to watch for:
- Muted Audio: If timer chimes remain silent, check the iPad physical mute switch or Control Center volume. Tap the whiteboard canvas once after opening, as iOS requires user interaction before playing audio. See Fix Audio Issues.
- Private Browsing Tabs: Avoid preparing lessons in Safari Private Tabs, as iOS purges local storage when tabs close.
- Storage Quotas: If image uploads fail, clear unused media under Backgrounds, as described in Image Upload Troubleshooting.
Summary
Add ClassHelper to your iPad Home Screen via the Safari Share menu for full-screen teaching without browser bars. Tap the canvas once to enable audio, and avoid private browsing tabs for lesson preparation.
