No Sound on the Whiteboard

Updated in September 2026 Applies to Windows, macOS, iPad

The countdown timer reaches zero, but the classroom chime does not sound. Audio issues on classroom displays typically stem from one of three factors: widget settings, projector audio routing, or browser autoplay restrictions.

Checking Widget Audio Settings

Classroom tools with audio chimes include individual sound toggles. If sound is disabled on the widget itself, system volume adjustments will have no effect:

  1. Select the widget on your whiteboard canvas and press S or click the gear icon to open settings.
  2. In the Classroom Timer, check the Alarm Sound selection. If set to Mute or None, choose a chime like School Bell or Gong.
  3. Verify the Volume slider located directly beneath the sound selector.
  4. Click Preview Sound to test playback immediately rather than waiting for the timer to count down.

Device Volume and Classroom Projector Routing

When computers connect to classroom projectors or external interactive panels, operating systems frequently redirect audio to displays lacking built-in speakers:

  1. Check your computer volume level and ensure system audio is not muted.
  2. Verify the audio output destination:
    • On Windows, click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select the correct speaker output.
    • On macOS, open System Settings > Sound > Output and select room speakers or headphones.
  3. Route sound to room wall speakers rather than the projector if the projector has no active speaker system.
  4. Check whether the browser tab itself is muted (indicated by a speaker icon with a line through it on the tab bar).

Browser Autoplay Restrictions

Modern web browsers block automated audio playback until a user interacts with the page. This prevents unwanted noise from unexpected website tabs:

  1. Click anywhere on the whiteboard canvas with your mouse or stylus before expecting sound alarms.
  2. Test audio playback on the Soundboard by clicking a sound tile.
  3. If sound remains silent, reload the page and trigger a tool sound with a direct click.
  4. On iPads, check the physical mute switch or Control Center volume. See iPad Troubleshooting for details.

Audio effects are synthesized locally within the browser; audio files do not require high-speed internet streaming. If problems continue, reach out through our Contact Page.

Summary

Use Preview Sound in the tool settings, confirm that your computer is sending audio to room speakers rather than a silent projector, and click the canvas once to satisfy browser autoplay rules.
