About This Template

Class meetings thrive on predictable structure. This template provides a reliable sequence: four randomized leadership roles, speaking norms, a timed discussion agenda, and agreed action items recorded live.

Assigning leadership roles during class meeting, third grade

How It Works

  1. Assign Meeting Roles (5 Minutes). Discussion leader, scribe, timekeeper, and norms monitor are selected using the Random Name Picker. Rotating responsibilities weekly ensures every student builds leadership skills rather than relying on the same volunteers.
  2. Review Discussion Norms (5 Minutes). The screen highlights core speaking guidelines: listen actively without interrupting, use respectful statements, and address issues rather than personalities. The norms monitor points to the board whenever reminders are needed.
  3. Celebrations & Reflections (10 Minutes). Review progress on decisions from the previous meeting and offer gratitude to classmates. The Timer remains visible on screen to help the timekeeper signal transitions gracefully.
  4. Address New Agenda Items (15 Minutes). Explore current concerns or classroom ideas. The student leader calls on speakers while the scribe records notes in the Text widget so the whole room follows the record live.
  5. Vote on Action Decisions (5 Minutes). Read proposed solutions aloud, hold a vote by show of hands, and record final agreements. Concluding with concrete commitments ensures meetings drive genuine classroom progress.

Adaptations & Variations

In lower elementary grades, discuss what each role entails before spinning names. A visual icon next to each role helps non-readers follow along. Keep discussion blocks concise: ten minutes with an actionable outcome achieves far more than extended, unfocused talk.

In middle school and high school, allow student facilitators to manage speaking queues independently while the teacher sits as an active participant in the circle. For advice on developing independent classroom leadership, explore our guide to First Weeks of Classroom Leadership.

The norms referenced during class meetings build on the foundational agreements created with our Classroom Rules template. The two templates complement each other: meetings resolve everyday nuances that broad rules leave open.

Preparation

  • Keep a digital notebook or class binder handy to record agreed resolutions.
  • Arrange desks or classroom chairs into an open circle beforehand to save time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these whiteboard templates free?

Yes. All templates and all classroom tools are completely free to use without an account. Premium costs $2.49 per month and syncs your custom board layouts across devices, with the first month free. Student teachers receive permanently free Premium with verification.

Where do student names come from?

From your saved class roster entered in the random name picker. Names remain stored locally in your browser. Without a custom list, the tool uses generic example student names.

How long does a meeting take?

The template is structured for 40 minutes: five for roles, five for norms, ten for appreciations, fifteen for discussion, and five for voting. Shorten discussion before cutting decision time.
